When I was a child in Sunday School, we learned the African American spiritual, “This Little Light of Mine.” My guess is that you know it: “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…”
In one of the verses, we sang, “Hide it under a bushel, no! I’m gonna let it shine.” For some time, I thought those words were a suggestion to keep the light hidden under a “bushelno,” whatever that was. “Hide it under a ‘bushelno.’”
Perhaps the light would be safer if it were hidden. Perhaps it would be protected from the wind and the rain. Perhaps it would last longer.
I eventually understood that those two words needed to be separated—“Hide it under a bushel—No!” And they point to the public nature of the life of faith.
