Donald Trump will be inaugurated as President of the United States a week from tomorrow. And no, this morning’s sermon will not be a repeat from eight years ago.

The word “inaugurate”  comes to us from Latin and has its origins in augury—the practice of divination from omens. Those of us who reside between the Gulf of America and our soon-to-be 51st state in these days of transition might be especially interested in what the signs point to. So, this morning we will hear of Jesus’ first “sign”—changing water into wine. And it just happens that the biblical scholar, Gail O’Day, discussing of the wedding at Cana wrote: “The miracle at Cana is the inaugural event of Jesus’ ministry. Jesus inaugurates his ministry with a vivid enactment of the gift he has to offer.”

Scripture Lessons: Amos 9:11-14; John 2:1-11
